HISTORY
Susan Vaughn School of Dance (SVSD) was founded in January of 1971 under the direction of Susan Vaughn. The first home of SVSD was the Knights of Columbus Hall on Cortland Street in downtown Jackson. The following fall, classes were taught in the Cascades Clubhouse, and in the fall of 1973, SVSD moved into the first permanent home across from Westwood Mall. In the spring of 1980, SVSD moved again to the old Woodville School on West Michigan Avenue. In 1990, the urgent need for more space and a roof that didn’t leak prompted the construction of the present facility. The "built for dance" home of SVSD is located at 3190 Lansing Avenue, Jackson, Michigan. It houses three large 35 x 50 dance rooms with sprung floors covered with Marley (non-skid surface). Each room has three walls of double barres, a fifty foot wall of mirrors and state-of-the-art sound systems. All rooms have viewing windows to allow parents and visitors to observe classes.
OUR MISSION
Along with providing the best possible dance training for each student, SVSD encourages positive traits such as high morale, self esteem, discipline, responsibility, individuality, concentration, perseverance and the realization that if they work hard, they can achieve excellence in all that they do. They need to understand that success in anything lies not in being the best but in doing your best. We pride ourselves in bringing out the very best in each dancer – child or adult – for no matter what age there is always the need for growth, pride and a sense of accomplishment.
